Herpetic Zoster Oticus
The virus that causes Shingles (Varicella-Zoster Virus) can affect the facial nerve. The condition is also called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. Patient with this condition often present with extremely painful vesicle eruptions on and around the ear. There is an associated facial palsy. Other symptoms may include hearing loss and vertigo.
Treatment is aimed at pain control. Antiviral, cortico-steorids and narcotic pain killers may sometimes necessary of the intense pain.
